Centered between Houston and Galveston, the Clear Lake Area was colonized in 1825 by Stephen F. Austin and became a thriving agricultural area in the 1920s, before becoming centered around the NASA/Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the 1960s. JSC, along with the Petrochemical industry, have been the major economic drivers for the area with the Medical industry starting to play a larger role. Also a major recreation area, the Clear Lake area has seen a large increase in the Commercial Boating and Hospitality/Tourism industries. Clear Lake itself is a 1,728 acre natural inlet that provides harborage for the third largest number of privately owned boats in the nation.
